The Black Ridge House is a newly-extended three-bedroom Victorian terraced house on the Warner Estate, an early twentieth-century suburban housing development in Walthamstow, north London. Neil Dusheiko Architects’ two-storey rear addition creates an open-plan kitchen, dining and living area on the ground floor and an en-suite master bedroom on the first floor. The project incorporates many energy-saving features, including a high standard of insulation, robust airtight detailing, underfloor heating in the extension, extensive skylights and highly-insulated Schueco doubled-glazed metal windows. The design of the extension was inspired by the roof lines and rhythm of the Warner houses. The building form responds to various site constraints, with the roof line respectful of the neighbouring properties. The black-stained timber extension contrasts with the Victorian brickwork so that the two elements of the house are distinct.
