Marek Wojciechowski Architects’ recently completed refurbishment project is at 30 Old Street on the boundaries of both the St Luke’s Conservation Area and the Hat & Feathers Conservation Area in central London. The context is characterised by an eclectic mix of design, materials and ornament, in a grid of narrow back streets that make London’s East End unique. The existing 1960s commercial building offered no contribution to this character and had remained vacant and unlet for some time. MWA stripped away the building’s facade, retaining only the steel and concrete skeleton as part of a residential conversion that now provides eight high-end apartments. The project employs brickwork, brass cladding and extensive glazing in its reconfiguration to enhance the character of the area by restating the proportions of the townhouses that once occupied the site.
