Dún Laoghaire–Rathdown County Council offices in Dublin have been illuminated using VELUX Modular Skylights

The VELUX Modular Skylight system has been specified as part of the refurbishment of Dún Laoghaire–Rathdown County Council offices in Dublin. One of the main aims of the project, which was delivered by Moston Construction, was to create a sense of vibrancy and openness, which could support public engagement and customer service. The use of natural light and ventilation was deemed crucial to achieving this goal.

When assessing its options, Dún Laoghaire–Rathdown County Council’s architects’ department identified the VELUX Modular Skylight system as ‘the only suitable product’ for bringing natural light into such a large space. The roofing specification was a complex challenge for both Moston Construction and VELUX Commercial. Not only did the space require a very large and specific volume of skylights to replace the existing roof, but they would also need to contribute to the council’s building management strategy. The latter includes ensuring adequate ventilation, creating energy savings, and meeting best practice standards for thermal transmittance.

Designed to work as a single system, the VELUX Modular Skylight system provides high-energy performance, thermal stability, flexural strength, and can be customised with a range of additional features to further the building management strategy. VELUX Commercial ensured that the modular units provided for the installation would both meet and exceed all of the council’s specifications for its environmental strategies. Triple glazing allows the units to reduce the loss, while motorised comfort ventilation allows the skylights to open (by up to 410mm) during the hotter summer months. To download the detailed project study please click here.
