Natural slate has long been valued for its durability, longevity and distinctive appearance. Today, its applications extend beyond traditional roofing, offering architects greater flexibility in contemporary building design. Through CUPA 12 roofing slate and CUPACLAD rainscreen cladding, CUPA PIZARRAS combines the proven performance of natural slate with modern architectural possibilities.
CUPA 12: Proven roofing performance
Quarried in northern Spain, CUPA 12 is one of the UK’s established natural roofing slates, with more than 45,000 roofs installed. Its smooth, blue-grey finish and consistent thickness make it suitable for a range of projects, from heritage renovations to contemporary homes.
Designed to withstand demanding weather conditions, CUPA 12 offers exceptional durability and a lifespan exceeding 100 years. Its natural composition and minimal processing also make it a considered choice for projects prioritising sustainability.
CUPACLAD in practice: Rosebury Farm, Hertfordshire
At Rosebury Farm, Hertfordshire, CUPACLAD 101 Logic demonstrates how natural slate can contribute to contemporary façade design. Designed by Squared Architects, the development comprises three modern homes that combine clean architectural lines with natural materials, complementing their rural surroundings.
CUPACLAD 101 Logic was selected to introduce texture and depth to the façades while maintaining a refined, minimalist appearance. Installed by Roof Brothers, the system allowed precise detailing around large window openings, supporting the architectural vision without compromising on performance.
The result is a distinctive development that demonstrates how natural slate can be used beyond the roof, combining architectural character with the durability of a ventilated rainscreen cladding system.
One material, multiple possibilities
From CUPA 12 roofing slate to CUPACLAD façades, natural slate offers architects a durable, versatile solution for both traditional and contemporary projects.
