Aluminium curtain walling from Aluprof has been installed on a visually-striking foyer at the Square Chapel Arts Centre in Halifax. Built in 1772, the grade II listed, red brick chapel is located adjacent to Piece Hall in the town centre. The extension by Architect Evans Vettori combines a new foyer with a 120-seat auditorium. The former is a light-filled space topped with an ‘arrowhead’ roof constructed from slim metal sections, and supported by three structural ‘trees’. The latter are designed to remove structural loads from the existing hall and chapel walls. The tree metaphor is echoed in the leaf tones employed on the angled canopy ceiling, and in the branch graphics applied to the curtain walling to reduce solar gain.

Designed and installed by specialist envelope contractor HKL, Aluprof’s MB-SR50N curtain walling system was specified in a dark grey powder-coated finish, and encloses the north- and south-facing sides of the foyer space. The system features a wide range of 50mm wide mullion and transom profiles, as well as substantial assembly cleats capable of supporting single-glazed modules weighing up to 450kg. It also includes a continuous HPVC thermal barrier and profiled EPDM glazing gaskets, ensuring high levels of insulation.
