CUPACLAD® 101 Logic has been specified by Lungfish Architects for Greenstone Primary School, located in Coalville. Situated on the edge of the National Forest, the project draws inspiration from its woodland setting and supports Leicestershire County Council’s net zero carbon ambitions. As a result, the CUPACLAD® slate rainscreen cladding system was selected to provide a natural, durable and low-carbon façade solution.

Designed by Lungfish Architects in collaboration with Harworth Group, Greenstone Primary School delivers 420 primary school places for the local community. Stepnell was appointed as main contractor, with Linear Developments (Nottingham) responsible for the façade installation. Guided by forest school principles that encourage a strong connection with nature, Lungfish Architects prioritised materials with robust sustainability credentials and the potential for future reuse.

Nathan Webb, Associate Architect at Lungfish Architects, commented: “Greenstone Primary School is the first of our school designs built for our client, Harworth Group. Their challenge to us, as a design team, was to develop a school blueprint that could adapt to any site, offering the flexibility to accommodate a range of school Form Entry requirements, alongside ensuing sustainability.”

CUPACLAD® 101 Logic rainscreen cladding system provided the ideal solution. Manufactured from 100 per cent natural Spanish slate and supported by a recyclable aluminium substructure, the system is both ecological and long-lasting. Unlike many façade materials, natural slate requires no heat or chemical processes during production, resulting in minimal environmental impact. Its simple extraction and processing methods give it an embodied carbon value of just 16 per cent compared to other roofing materials. With a lifespan exceeding 100 years, the slate can also be repurposed, extending its lifecycle.

The system’s sustainability credentials are further supported by its BRE Global Verified Environmental Product Declaration (EPD). BRE Global is an independent certification body recognised internationally for its expertise in Life Cycle Analysis (LCA), providing architects and specifiers with verified and transparent environmental performance data.

Linear Developments installed 1,000m² of CUPACLAD® across three elevations of each of the six single-storey pavilions. Combined with brick, render and timber elements, the façades deliver a contemporary aesthetic that complements the surrounding residential area.

Following completion, Linear Developments has since been appointed to deliver the same CUPACLAD® system at Thoresby Vale Primary Academy in Mansfield, another Harworth Group project currently under construction.
