JJ Lorraine on coming to MIPIM as a free agent having left the practice that he founded, planning the second act of his career, and being named after Jean-Jacques Rousseau.
What brings you to MIPIM and what do you hope to achieve?
I have recently exited the practice that I founded so this year feels like the start of a new chapter. I’m up for any and every conversation and very much open to offers.
How do you set about defining the next chapter of your career?
I have no fixed ideas about what comes next, but it will likely be more about who I work with than what I do.
What gets you out of bed in the morning?
Sunrise. Have just renovated at home and don’t have curtains yet.
What’s a valuable lesson you learned in your career?
Jump in.
What’s a goal you have for the next 12 months?
The next year is about finding a role that can keep me as engaged, rewarded and happy as my last role did.
What’s something you could talk about for hours?
I’d rather listen for hours.
What small decision changed your life?
Went to a pub and met the love of my life.
Who is one person you’d love to have dinner with?
Jean-Jacques Rousseau, who I was named after. He believed people are good by nature but have been corrupted by society and civilization.
What professional accomplishments are you most proud of?
From scratch I built a profitable architectural brand that has employed around 150 people over the years and worked with the best of the best of the London development scene. I’m also proud to have stepped away from the business amicably, leaving it in strong shape.
What’s been your biggest mistake and what have you learned from it.
After COVID I had to make people redundant, because of bad communication our company culture took a painful knock. I’ve since tried to be open and transparent with good and bad news.
What is the most adventurous thing you’ve ever done?
Not knowing what the second act to my career is going to be feels like a big adventure.
What’s your go-to way to relax after a long day?
A 10-mile cycling time trial isn’t an obvious choice, but it clears the mind and man do you feel chilled about life afterwards.
Who is your role model?
My mother, she did everything with immense grace, kindness and fearlessness. I’m far from the finished article she was. Professionally, Richard Rogers, tops the list for his compassion, urbanity and impact.
