Architectural watercolours by John Marx

Buildings.

‘Études’ collects the dreamlike watercolour studies made by architect John Marx – founder of San Francisco-based practice Form4 Architecture – and presents them alongside 40 of his short poems. The layout of these texts is intended as “a kind of musical score for reading”, says the book’s designer, Jeremy Mende, and elicits comparisons between the operation of words and watercolours in suggesting an interior life.

The book also includes essays by Owen Hopkins, on ‘drawing critically’, Pierluigi Serraino on the art-historical context of architectural drawing and watercolours, Laura Iloniemi on watercolours and modern American painting, and by Marx himself on the creative process.
