With large swathes of people now working across different environments, at home, in the office and moving between the two, designers need to respond and cater to new needs. At the same time, clients are continuing to ask for workplace environments that engage and inspire, while also encouraging a sense of place.
The Shifting Fields carpet tile collection from commercial flooring designer-manufacturer Shaw Contract EMEA supports this feeling of transition by creating more balanced and connected environments indoors. Recently featured in William McDonough + Partners ICEhouse pavilion at Davos, Shifting Fields features three styles of 500x500mm carpet tile designed to work together. Suitable for a range of commercial interiors, co-ordinating patterns and colour tones offer the designer a whole range of looks.
Style Plains, a multi-directional, large-scale pattern inspired by windswept plains and grasslands, is available in nine nature-inspired colours, including Desert, Pristine, Remote, Tide, Evergreen, Coast, Sunset, Stone and Reservoir. Style, Landing, available in three colours, is small on scale but big on texture and was inspired by stone and earth. Meanwhile, transition tile Landing Edge (available in six colours) can be used as a standalone feature to create distinctive designs depending on the installation method, such as border. Or it can provide a seamless transition between Plains and Landing tiles on the journey from one space to another.
Kerry Deffley, Design Manager EMEA at Shaw Contract says, “Shifting Fields is a collection that can work in a range of environments and offers the designer options to create subtle transitions in colour and pattern. Colours such as Sunset in this collection also co-ordinate with our other carpet tile collections to create a whole new range of design possibilities.”
A new breed of sustainable flooring
As well as being inspired by the natural world around us, Shifting Fields represents a flooring solution that is sustainable for people and the planet. It does so in many ways, starting with materials.
The carpet tiles are produced using Shaw’s 100 per cent recycled content EcoSolution Q100 yarn, while the backings contain either 75 per cent recycled content (TaskWorx) or 90 per cent if customers opt for the ComfortWorx backing which is made from post-consumer PET bottles. ComfortWorx also provides enhanced acoustic and underfoot comfort.
And thanks to Shaw Contract’s commitment to ingredient transparency and material health, the range is Cradle to Cradle Bronze certified.
Indoor air quality is another crucial marker of sustainability. The Shifting Fields collection is Indoor Air Comfort Gold certified for low-emitting products, demonstrating Shaw Contract’s focus on quality and contribution to creating healthier indoor environments.
Furthermore, the collection is part of the company’s carbon neutral collection portfolio, and is optimised for low embodied carbon. Shaw Contract produces the Shifting Fields collection in the UK at its carbon neutral manufacturing facility, in Sanquhar, Scotland, which operates with electricity from 100 per cent renewable sources.
To complete the circular and responsible nature of the collection, carpet tiles at the end of their life will be reclaimed by Shaw Contract to be repurposed through the company’s `reTURN’ reclamation programme, which is open to customers across the EMEA region.
