Specifying a wetroom project that requires flush transitions and low height access within the shower area can be challenging. One large hurdle to overcome is sourcing products that are suitable for the project, comply with the Building Regulations, and work together to create a fully waterproof system. In seeing these pain points first-hand at project site visits, and going on to discuss them with key players within the architecture industry, Schlüter-Systems has come up with two products that they believe will solve this problem.

Schlüter-KERDI-LINE-G3 drain
Launched in early 2020, the Schlüter-KERDI-LINE-G3 is a stainless-steel drainage channel that can be fitted without the need for drilling or screwing. It complies with BS EN 1253, providing a 50mm water seal and anti-blockage based on an 8mm ball bearing test. The drain is available with central, offset, and dual outlets, and is suitable for perimeter or intermediate installation. As is standard for Schlüter linear drains, it also comes with a pre-adhered collar of Schlüter-KERDI membrane to allow for reliable connection to the bonded waterproof assembly.

During the development process Schlüter was keen to hear from several influential architectural practices and find out what could simplify their projects. When prototypes were presented to them, feedback was provided, and appropriate tweaks were made which resulted in the final product.

Low-height shower tray (part of the Schlüter-KERDI-SHOWER-LTS range)
A preformed shower tray can be extremely useful in the creation of multiple wetrooms – an example being a large-scale hotel project, where uniformity is essential. It means that architects will know exactly what they are getting, and it will match the specification drawn up perfectly.

The low height shower tray within the Schlüter-KERDI-SHOWER-LTS range offers even more benefits due to its low height. It provides a fall of 1:80, in comparison to many shower trays currently on the market which have a fall of 1:50. Whilst a fall of 1:50 is fully compliant with building standards, it does not offer the significant height reduction provided when using Schlüter’s low height shower tray.

The perfect pair
Even before the Schlüter-KERDI-LINE-G3 was launched, Schlüter knew it was just one part of the low height puzzle. The next step was to introduce a compatible shower tray to allow for a flush transition and create simple level access wetrooms – which led to the creation and unveiling of the low height shower tray within the Schlüter-KERDI-SHOWER-LTS range. The low height version of the shower tray has been designed specifically to work alongside Schlüter-KERDI-LINE-G3 drain in the hope of making low height wetroom installations achievable and simple going forward.

The compatibility of these Schlüter-KERDI products means that full peace of mind is offered, alongside system warranties. Using a single source solution from one manufacturer is ideal for simplifying warranties and providing the reassurance that the products will function most effectively when installed together.

Additional elements
When recommending these products for specification, it is helpful to be aware of additional Schlüter products which are compatible with the them. This will offer additional system warranties that may not be possible when using products from different manufacturers.

Underfloor heating is a popular choice for hotels and commercial areas, and in using the compatible drain and low height shower tray it is easily achievable. When cut to 1000mm long, the low height shower tray works perfectly alongside an 18mm timber floor and the underfloor heating system Schlüter-DITRA-HEAT-DUO.

Another important feature which will impact the aesthetic of the wetroom is drain grates. Available in a wide range of styles, the Schlüter-KERDI-LINE STYLE drain grate can be installed effortlessly alongside the Schlüter-KERDI-LINE-G3 drain. The grates are suitable for use with different thicknesses of floor tile and stone from as low as 6mm to 20mm and more, offering full flexibility.

Both the Schlüter-KERDI-LINE-G3 and Schlüter-KERDI-SHOWER-LTS are welcome additions to the Schlüter-KERDI family, helping to create beautiful installations that will stand the test of time.
