The education sector faces enormous challenges. Advances in technology, new teaching approaches and a renewed focus on health and wellbeing are transforming expectations of learning environments. Shifts in funding models mean that educational establishments are increasingly relying on their building stock to attract students and staff. Meanwhile, growing concern about environmental issues has prioritised the need for education buildings that are cost- and carbon-efficient to build, maintain and run.
Presentations by five speakers will draw on case studies to illustrate best practice, highlight key challenges and offer practical solutions for improving the resilience, sustainability, and desirability of our education buildings.
Stafford Critchlow, director at Wilkinson Eyre, will discuss how the practice approaches the design and delivery of education projects in urban environments.
Sarah Jefferson, Vandersanden’s UK Technical Advisor, will explain how and when different types of efflorescence occur on brickwork, plus how good detailing, site practice and construction can limit its effects.
Tom Waddicor, associate at Maccreanor Lavington, will examine the practice’s approach to designing education buildings and how this has informed the delivery of projects such as the Kingsgate School in London.
Claire Barton, partner at Haverstock, will present the recently completed Forest Bridge School in Berkshire – an exemplar learning environment for pupils with autism.
Ian Dryden, National Specification Manager – Bituminous Membranes at SIG Design & Technology, will examine the need for Multi Academy Trusts (MATs) to plan the remediation and maintenance of school roofs, and how a traffic-light graded approach can help to meet project requirements.
