The Architectural Drawing Summer School 2021 opens for student applications and calls for practice sponsorship

The Architectural Drawing Summer School is aimed at A-Level students with an interest in architecture and urbanism, and focuses specifically on how architects using drawing in practice.

The drawing school takes place over the course of a week and range of locations in Somerset, where students take part in workshops and projects set by a roster of educators, thinkers and practitioners.

The course is open to all students in A-Levels Year 1 and 2, and applications are especially welcome from pupils who may not otherwise have exposure to architecture as a career option. Places are awarded on the merit of submitted drawings and a brief written statement, and accommodation, tuition and drawing materials will be offered free of charge. The deadline for applications is 28 May 2021.

Practices are invited to support the programme by sponsoring full scholarships at £500 or half-scholarships at £250. Donors will be invited to review students’ work and meet with the course leaders and participants at Hauser & Wirth in Bruton in August 2021.

Any excess funds will be put towards broadening the reach of the 2022 programme, expanding intake and adding locations to reach more students considering architecture as a career.

Now in its fifth year, the Architectural Drawing Summer School was set up by Drawing Matter trustee Niall Hobhouse, and executive director of the Royal Fine Art Commission Trust Robert Bargery. The programme is supported by Professor Andrew Clancy of Kingston School of Art and Debbie Hillyerd of Hauser & Wirth Somerset alongside a roster of educators, thinkers and practitioners.
