A team of British architects has won an international design competition to re-masterplan the Inner Laksevåg waterfront district of Bergen, Norway. The team, which is called LondonOn and comprises Haptic Architects, Gort Scott, Morris & Company, and Turner Works, supported by Vill Urbanisme, Elliot Wood and Urban Systems Design, responded to the Bergen Municipality brief to restore and redevelop the former shipbuilding site overlooking the Puddefjorden.

LondonOn’s winning ‘LAX’ proposal focuses on repair and remodelling, with the aim of transforming the shipyard into a creative and manufacturing centre of marine industry for the 21st century. This will include provision for electric vessel production, offshore renewable energy development, and ecologically sourced seafood.

The proposal eschews a single ‘eye catching’ building in favour of a harmonious collection of structures that contribute equally and are ‘stitched’ into the local context. Pedestrian and cycle bridges, including one suspended from an existing concrete road bridge, will provide new links to the city centre and the nearby Dokken area.
