Georgian architectural practice Design Avenue Studio has completed the Lopota Jazz Club at Lopota Lake Resort & Spa in Kakheti, eastern Georgia. The two-story, energy-efficient building is located on the northern edge of the 60-hectare resort estate. Designed to evoke the ‘jazz experience’, a drum-like concrete and stone structure is enveloped by locally-sourced timber columns, which define the entrance and a large open-air atrium. Manicured lawns and trees dotted between the timber columns are intended to evoke the region’s natural heritage, while contrasting with the curving external masonry walls.

“The project concept revolves around creating an environment that seamlessly integrates the natural beauty of the resort with the rich, soulful sounds of jazz,” explains project architect David Koiava. “The design aims to evoke a sense of harmony between the landscape and the music, using materials like locally-sourced wood and stone to reflect the region’s heritage. Acoustic optimisation was a key focus, ensuring that the space not only enhances the listening experience but also encourages creativity and performance.”

The interior is designed to be both intimate and vibrant, employing dark brown, mustard, orange and deep blue hues, alongside atmospheric lighting. A mix of booths, freestanding tables and bar stools, makeup the different seating options for a maximum capacity of 150 guests. The spaces also incorporate Pierre Frey fabrics, and key furniture pieces from Pianca, Pedrali and Ferm Living.

A showpiece pendant lamp comprising three overlapping copper rings hangs over the glossy black countertop of the first-floor bar, emitting a warm inviting light. On the second floor, a balcony situated above the bar, provides a more private setting overlooking the stage. The materials selection, spatial planning and sound systems were curated by Akukon, a world-leading acoustic design company from Finland.
