What types of MDF are commonly available?
There are various types of MDF, including standard MDF, light MDF, moisture-resistant MDF, No added formaldehyde MDF, flame-retardant MDF and exterior-grade MDF. The most common is the standard MDF panel.
What are the advantages of MDF over timber and other sheeting materials?
MDF is a popular material due to its smooth finish, machinability, strength and consistency. It also tends to be more cost-effective compared to other wood-based products. Furthermore, MDF is environmentally friendly, sustainable, and can last a long time if well maintained. One huge benefit of MEDITE MDF is that it has excellent machining properties. The wood fibres are pressed with resin making a homogeneous panel that is easier to machine. This means that the edges won’t splinter when cut compared to alternative wood products. Additionally, the wood fibres create a smooth surface, resulting in far less imperfections and making it easier for furniture makers to apply paint.

Can MDF be used outside and if so in what applications?
MEDITE TRIOCYA EXTREME and MEXDITE EXTERIOR can be used externally. MEDITE TRICOYA EXTREME has a guarantee of up to 50 years above ground and 25 years in ground, and can be used for applications such as garden furniture, shower rooms, outdoor and indoor doors and gates, fencing, planters and many more. MEDITE EXTERIOR can be used for a range of external applications, including signs, shop fronts, garden furniture components.
How durable is MDF and what treatments/coatings are available to extend its life expectancy?
MDF is a durable material that can last a long time if well maintained, and there are many treatments and coatings available for it. We always recommend discussing this with the paint manufacturer.
Are there specific applications where MDF should be avoided?
You should avoid using MDF in structural applications unless the DOP states otherwise.
