At Northcot we believe in helping architects create inspirational, award-winning brick architecture. With nearly a century’s experience in traditional brick making, we combine age-old hand throwing and kiln firing with sophisticated weathering techniques to create complex bespoke blends to precise specifications. As well as offering an extensive range of standard bricks, we can match a multitude of sizes, colours and textures, producing facing on four or even six sides where required. As passionate advocates of brick in today’s architecture, we are proud to be four-time winners of the Brick Development Association’s ‘Supreme Award’ and associated with several RIBA National Awards and a Stirling Prize winner.

Radley College Chapel Extension
Purcell’s extension to Radley College’s Grade II* listed Victorian Chapel continues the intricate geometry of the existing Chapel, while expressing its own distinctive character and presence. Northcot created three, bespoke handmade and machine-made blends in imperial sizes, plus many special shapes to match the colour and texture of the existing Gothic Revival chapel. This inspiring project was the Supreme Winner of 2022 Brick Awards.

Walters & Cohen’s Dorothy Garrod Building was a 2019 RIBA National and Supreme Brick Awards winner. The new student residence drew on the architectural heritage of Newnham College Cambridge.

Northcot created a bespoke blend of four different types of red handmade bricks for its intricate facades. Contemporary ‘hit-and-miss’ brickwork, made from solid bricks (without a frog) with five faces exposed, is weaved seamlessly into the form and texture of the elevation.

Newport Street Gallery
This 2016 Stirling Prize, RIBA National and ‘Supreme’ Brick Award-winning art gallery from Caruso St John involved the conversion of three Victorian buildings flanked by two new-build structures at either end. The immensely detailed semi-industrial facades featured two distinct bespoke (pale and dark), brick blends created by Northcot to match the ‘common’ style brick of the original listed buildings. 6000 bespoke handmade and standard machine-made special shapes were also manufactured to match.

Manchester’s Whitworth
This prestigious art gallery extension, designed by MUMA, was a 2015 RIBA National and Brick Awards ‘Supreme Winner’. Northcot’s bespoke ‘Whitworth Blend’, comprising smooth machine-made bricks, reflected the dark red bricks of the original Edwardian building. The intricate ‘slash and stich’ detailing, made from handmade matching specials, created an important visual link to the city’s textile history.

Battersea Power Station
We were proud to work with architects WilkinsonEyre and Conservation Advisers Purcell in the restoration of London’s Battersea Power Station, one of Europe’s largest and most iconic brick buildings, and winner of the 2022 Brick Awards Innovation category.
Restoring the integrity of the original elevations, required 1.75 million custom-blended bespoke bricks, including 23 individual brick types in unique sizes. Northcot produced 1.3 million handmade bricks in two highly complex bespoke blends, which were hand-blended in precise ratios to duplicate the original colour palettes and their various stages of weathering.
In addition, 200,000 bricks were precast offsite, a further 65,000 ‘specials’ were individually ‘thrown’ and a further machine-made blend was created for the interior walls of this magnificent building.
