Mulroy Architects has rebuilt and extended a three-bedroom Victorian villa in Muswell Hill, north London. Despite its charm, the existing villa was of very poor quality and a complete rebuild was favoured, says the architect. The new volume is conceived as a sympathetic yet contrasting addition.

A simple, glazed hallway connects the two structures, enabling side access to the garden. Careful reworking of the internal levels has maximised the usable internal space. The large entrance opens towards a glazed lightwell, illuminating a bright yellow steel staircase. Polished concrete flooring extends to the open-plan living and kitchen space at the heart of the plan.

The first floor comprises a studio, utility room, guest bedroom and bathroom. Arched windows frame each space. The extension houses two large bedrooms with adjacent bathrooms featuring generous skylights. Outside, black metal standing-seam cladding is intended to complement the Villa’s slate roof.
