Minimal Studio’s radical reworking of a Majorca supermarket explores consumer culture through minimalist design.
Minimal Studio has completed Plastic Box, a 193-square-metre retail project in Port de Pollensa, Majorca, that reinterprets the supermarket as a place of aesthetic and material reflection. Commissioned by Voramar Store, the project reimagines the everyday shopping experience through the lens of minimalist brutalism, repurposing industrial materials to create a striking yet functional environment.
The structure presents as a raw concrete volume with unadorned façades. Recessed entrances, conceived as dark portals, heighten the contrast between the exterior and interior. Inside, a monolithic composition of concrete, steel and repurposed plastic creates a stripped-back atmosphere that is intended to foreground both the architecture and the act of consumption.
The centrepiece of the design is a suspended modular ceiling comprising more than 1,000 recycled plastic crates. Each crate serves multiple functions: diffusing natural light, concealing lighting and mechanical systems, and incorporating elements of rainwater management. The crates – typically used in logistics – are recontextualised here as both structure and ornament, forming a continuous overhead grid that casts dynamic shadows across the space throughout the day.
The interior language continues the project’s brutalist logic. Polished concrete is used for the floor, checkout counters and display tables, while steel shelving units provide a utilitarian framework for goods. Walls are finished in mortar, and lighting is kept indirect, allowing the merchandise to be highlighted by the interplay of shadow and surface.
Environmental performance is supported through material reuse and low-impact finishes. The plastic crate ceiling is finished with a water-based vinyl-acrylic paint, and the restrained palette minimises embodied carbon by relying heavily on recycled components and robust, long-life materials.
