The British Constructional Steelwork Association is hosting a day event – taking place at the Mermaid, London on 13 November – aimed at architects, engineers and designers to explore the challenges and opportunities shaping the future of steel construction.

On 13 November 2025 at the Mermaid London, the British Constructional Steelwork Association (BCSA) is hosting The Future of Steel Construction: a day of lectures, panel discussions and case studies about best practice in specifying structural steelwork, emerging trends, and upcoming changes in design codes and standards.

Second generation Eurocodes – do you know what’s coming?
Led by eminent industry professionals, who have all sat on the CEN committees that have shaped the second generation of Eurocodes; Dr David Moore, Mr Mungo Stacy, Mr Chris Hendy and Professor Leroy Gardner, will be taking you through the major changes which will need to be adopted when specifying structural steelwork for buildings and bridges.

Case study sessions will present new emerging practices in the specification and erection of steelwork, through the lens of the engineer, steelwork contractor and main contractor; each presenting their individual challenges and how they were overcome at each stage of the project.

The challenges of a cut and carve approach
Cut and carve practice will be showcased through the innovative and carbon saving project – Giltspur Street. Not only did the project involve jacking-up floors within the building and, reusing steelwork, but also avoiding the listed monument, The London Wall, on the ground floor of the construction site.

Hybrid material design to optimise performance
The Edge focuses on hybrid design, where steel, timber and concrete have been integrated to create a 27-storey office building. Each material was chosen for specific parts of the building construction, to maximise their individual benefits and limit embodied carbon. Reclaimed steel and new fabricated box sections were specified to make a significant contribution to the circular economy, as well as enable an expressive form and structural precision.

Making an impact with reclaimed and reused steel
The design and construction of a building with reclaimed steel for reuse comes with its challenges, but one which has been overcome on 30 Duke Street. 78 per cent of the structural steel frame has come from a donor building, supplemented with reclaimed sections from a stockholder, delivering nearly 744t CO₂e savings.

Steel design for fire: strategy vs compliance
In the post-Grenfell era, with the new building safety regulations related to fire, it can be difficult to navigate the requirements and the approach to take. Professor Luke Bisby, who was an expert witness for the Grenfell enquiry, will guide you through how architects and engineers must now design with fire strategy in mind, not just compliance.

Optimising sustainability in design
Dr Michael Sansom and Mr David Brown will highlight options available to structural engineers to design efficient, sustainable steel-framed buildings. Individual and joint BCSA-SCI initiatives have resulted in a suite of tools and guidance to enable sustainable steelwork design and fabrication, which will be presented and discussed.

Function vs innovation
The future of steel construction isn’t just functional, it’s exciting, and this event aims to showcase just what can be achieved when engineers, fabricators and construction teams work together at the early stages of the design process.

Exhibitors will be showcasing their innovative products which can help streamline the design, manufacture and erection of structural frames, and will be on hand throughout the day to answer questions about how they may help you.
