Located 43 kilometers east of Dakar, Blaise Diagne International Airport serves as Senegal’s primary aviation hub, connecting West Africa to key destinations across Europe, Macaronesia, the Middle East, and North America. Designed to accommodate the region’s growing air traffic, the airport reflects both architectural ambition and environmental responsiveness.

Senegal’s tropical climate – with year-round high temperatures – necessitated an advanced solar control solution for the terminal complex. To this end, high-performance glass products from Şişecam were selected for their ability to combine excellent aesthetics with energy efficiency, and safety. Şişecam Duosol T 50 glass was installed In the main terminal building to ensure optimal solar control and thermal insulation. Meanwhile, the AIBD passenger bridge and train station building utilise Şişecam Duosol T 40 One, providing similar benefits with tailored light transmittance levels.

Buildings.

Both Şişecam Duosol T 50 and Şişecam Duosol T 40 One are Temperable Solar Low-E coated glass sheets, delivering dual functionality – solar control and thermal insulation – through a single coating. Their use significantly reduces cooling and heating loads, while maintaining high levels of transparency and visual comfort.

Şişecam Safeprotec was also specified to maximise safety and security throughout the airport. Employing multiple glass layers bonded with PVB interlayers, Şişecam SafeProtec provides protection against injury, enhances security by resisting forced entry, improves acoustic insulation, and blocks up to 96-99% of UV radiation.

Offered in various thicknesses, colors, and patterns, SafeProtec is suitable for high-risk or high-traffic applications, such as doors, balustrades, shopfronts, roof glazing, schools, hospitals, and public buildings. Meeting EN 12600 and EN 356 standards, SafeProtec provides designers with a versatile safety glazing solution.
