SLG’s DDA-compliant lift installation combines practicality with good aesthetics on a listed building in London

The installation of a DDA-compliant lift solution on a grade II* listed barrister’s chambers in London’s Lincoln’s Inn fields provided a unique challenge for lift specialist SLG Group UK.

The existing building has steps up to the front door, but for various reasons, installing a lift at street level was not an option. The solution was to descend from the pavement to the basement – a distance of around two metres. This not only facilitates entry to the building, but also provides a route to the passenger lifts for accessing the other floors.

Following an initial consultation with the architect, SLG was nominated as the chosen supplier to the main contractor. The company supplied a general arrangement drawing of the lift installation for approval prior to manufacture.
Lift enclosure
For aesthetic reasons, the horizontal rail within the existing railings had to be retained as far as possible, while also accommodating a fully operational gate that met the relevant safety standards. This entailed removing a section of the rail, modifying it in the workshop, and fitting it to the lift gate assembly. To minimise trapping points, a flush glass panel was installed behind the railing section. The entire gate assembly was painted black, as were the sections on the lift. A powder coating was applied over a hot zinc spray finish to enhance corrosion resistance.
