Knauf explains how its solution-based approach to specification is benefitting architects and the building’s they design.

Jack of all trades, master of none. Can that aphorism apply to products? Is specification too often a case of choosing the familiar rather than seeking out a specially designed solution? Leaning into tried and tested commodity solutions may feel like a safe and cost-effective option, but manufacturers don’t develop new products for no reason. Keeping up with product innovation is challenging but should add to the quality of the design process.

Now particularly, the speed at which legislation and regulation is changing in the building sector is a major challenge. The Building Safety Act, for example places renewed emphasis on the correct specification of the correct system for any application. It’s a welcome development, but places considerable responsibility on the specifier who needs to be able to trust the product development and tested performance of the products they choose.

And as the conversation turns to remedial works, how can we also factor in the need to design buildings to meet current standards without putting present projects at risk of being out of standards in the future? Is it possible to deliver the best solution if a design does not use products and systems which are designed with a specific function in mind?

Picking up performance
For Knauf, this puts the focus on what might be classed as commodity products and how by utilising more performance-based alternatives in specific build scenarios, designers and specifiers can go above and beyond on hitting targets. High-performance boards are a prime example of putting specific use right at the heart of the product.

Alongside the ‘standard’ range of boards on offer, Knauf has delved into special-use products which are designed to give specifiers and architects the exact solution for a more challenging project. With options for boards with enhanced fire or moisture resistant properties, Knauf has designed the range to make not just specification, but installation easier. This is where the generalist approach begins to struggle and performance boards edge ahead.

A prime example is bathrooms or wet rooms where material will be exposed to high humidity or moisture. Standard wallboard, without any moisture-resistant properties, would require extra components to prevent moisture damage in the long term. Knauf Moisture Panel contains additives to prevent moisture ingress caused by high humidity. This reduces damp related issues and the associated snagging costs, helping the contractor to achieve a better build.

Putting it into practice
One project which perfectly summarises the idea of using specific performance products is the renovation and extension of Birmingham’s historic Grade II listed Municipal Bank. Having been sat unoccupied since 2016, the building was purchase by The University of Birmingham to turn into a civic space that could benefit all.

Architect, Glancy Nicholls designed the extension and refurbishment. The build was complex, having to accommodate and preserve many heritage features. One integral aspect of the build was the need to bring the 100-year-old building up to modern specifications so that it could meet today’s Building Regulations.

The main contractor, Galliford Try, specified Knauf products for the internal elements, which included performance plasterboards to meet performance requirements and protect the listed nature of the building. Being a mixed-use space with offices and events spaces, thorough sound proofing was needed in places. Knauf Sound Panel and Soundshield Plus were used to create a suitable and comfortable environment throughout the building. Knauf Fire Panel also featured heavily to ensure the building’s fire standards met stringent regulations, especially given its Grade II listed status.

Installing confidence
By focusing on performance and taking a solution – not product – approach, Knauf are giving architects and specifiers the flexibility to choose the best total package to suit the project they’re working on. However, providing the right product is only part of the equation. Understanding the application of the performance solution is equally vital to building confidence.

Backed up by a dedicated technical support team with access to technical data sheets, test certification, and specification expertise, Knauf is able to offer considerable support to customers. Further peace of mind comes via the Knauf System Performance Warranty which provides customers using the performance systems complete support and reassurance in the product.
