Arne Jacobsen’s Bellevue Beach changing room in Klampenborg, Denmark, has been given a new lease of life as a wellness centre.
Arne Jacobsen’s bathing facility for Bellevue Beach in Klampenborg, a northern suburb of Copenhagen, remains a popular destination for day trippers – not least architecture students with an interest in modernism. The listed, 270-square-metre men’s changing room, which forms part of the original Bellevue Beach development, has recently been transformed into wellness centre, including a sauna, seawater bath, yoga space, and café.
The renovation scheme has been undertaken with the careful consideration for the original building, as well as a desire to pay homage to the architect’s inimitable design vision. Upgraded bathroom areas with sanitary fittings from Duravit have also been installed as part of this approach. The latter comprising above-counter basins from the Happy D.2 Plus range, Zencha’s gently rounded mirrors, and ME by Starck toilets.
Jacobsen’s celebrated development around Klampenborg beach not only includes changing rooms, kiosks and the iconic striped lifeguards’ towers (1932), but also the Bauhaus-inspired Bellavista residential development (1934) and Bellevue Theatre (1936) – considered to be one of the architect’s most accomplished works.
