Bespoke walk-on rooflights from Glazing Vision brighten up a stylish basement conversion in Holland

A large, bespoke walk-on rooflight from Glazing Vision floods this newly built basement conversion in Waalwijk, Holland, with daylight – without reducing the enjoyment of the garden. With today’s mantra of ‘don’t move, improve’, it is important that homeowners understand how they can best upgrade their property and lifestyle.

So, when these homeowners spoke to Goedehuizen Architects, they were keen to understand what could be done to create more space, and how they could incorporate a new lounge area for entertaining friends. Without wishing to reduce the size of the garden space, it was decided the best option would be to create a basement extension.

A common problem associated with basement extensions is lack of daylight, resulting in gloomy spaces that are largely dependent on artificial light. To avoid this, the architect chose a rooflight option that would enable ample daylight to enter the basement without impacting on the outdoor space.

Following discussions with Glazing Vision it was decided that the initial concept – designed by project architect Maikel Snels – could be achieved, and would include three bespoke, double-glazed, diamond-shaped walk-on Flushglaze rooflights, as well as a large, U-shaped, walk-on rooflight split into 20 sections. The latter measures 1200mm (span) x 11700mm x 15500mm x 11700mm.

Employing Flushglaze technology, Glazing Vision walk-on rooflights are designed to be installed flush with the external flooring, which is perfect for flat roof terraces. The multipart construction also allowed the roof beams to be camouflaged within the design. Due to its frameless design, the U-shaped walk-on Flushglaze flat rooflight was not only able to provide the required daylighting, but also created an aesthetically pleasing design that complemented the garden and maximised the external space.

The additional daylight has helped to bring new life to the property, providing the homeowners with the perfect lounge area for entertaining. “The finished result is great”, says Maikel Snels. “We get a lot of positive responses to the rooflights. Because of the rooflights, the basement is a very light space.”
