Designed by EPR Architects, Kimpton Fitzroy London, located in the heart of Bloomsbury, is the first UK property for the Kimpton hotel brand. Named after the original architect of the property Charles Fitzroy Doll, the 334-bedroom boutique hotel stands for vision and craft, history and modernity, as well as luxury and timelessness.
Lamilux designed, supplied and installed a 3.5-metre wide by 14-metre long PR60 monopitch rooflight to complement the hotel’s winter garden. The luxury hotel brand is reflected in the architectural flair of the restoration, with architectural features paying tribute to the iconic heritage of the building. Faux beams were introduced above the winter garden where the 13-degree sloped Lamilux rooflight overlooks the striking interior design. The glazing division of the PR60 rooflight was carefully designed to align with the faux beams, concealing the mullions and ensuring maximum daylight. Each of the nine glass panels measure five square-metres and weigh a substantial 214kg.
Lamilux used its knowledge and expertise to complete the installation of this highly technical central London project. An incredibly tight site with no tower crane required just-in-time delivery and installation of materials. The company also worked closely with contractor S&T Interiors from an early stage to plan and execute the installation on time and within budget. All the glass units were hoisted from the loading bay at street level to a roof level platform. They were then wheeled down a ramp, around a tight corner, and lifted using a scaffold gantry above the rooflight. Finally, the glass was tracked along with a vacuum lifter to the required position before being fixed into place.
Officially opened in October 2018, Kimpton Fitzroy London is the first of 12 Principle and De Vere hotels to be rebranded in UK cities. Lamilux is proud to be an integral part of a landmark development within London’s Bloomsbury.
