Offsite has been somewhat restricted so far by its perception amongst baby-boomer construction professionals (who hold the power when it terms of choosing construction methods), and by its capacity for new projects without this investment. However, UK construction is approaching a tipping point that may spell change no matter what. With a growing population of both young people (who need affordable homes quickly) and older people (who are living longer), as well as an ageing onsite workforce and the absence of traditional skills, it may be difficult for traditional construction to keep up with demand, including the government target of 300,000 new homes per year. There is also renewed pressure on developers and housebuilders to construct more sustainable and energy-efficient homes in the process.

Its engineers have developed SMARTPLY ULTIMA to meet the offsite industry’s need for a high-performance engineered wood panel that is suitable for the most demanding structural applications in offsite. The panel is manufactured using state of the art ContiRoll® technology, which facilitates the formaldehyde-free bonding of sustainably produced wood strands, precisely orientated and continuously into large-scale panels measuring up to 2.8-metres wide by 7.5-metres long. Each panel also incorporates enhanced moisture resistance and can be manufactured up to a maximum thickness of 40mm.
