School Fencing from CLD Fencing Systems contributes to new Greenwich gateway project

A new £45m all-through school on London’s Greenwich Peninsula has benefited from CLD Fencing Systems dedicated School Fencing. Accommodating up to 1646 children from nursery to sixth form, St Mary Magdalene School occupies a two-hectare site at the corner of Millennium Way and John Harrison Way. CLD Fencing Systems, in collaboration with landscape architect Grant Associates, worked extensively on the specification of a number of mesh fencing systems.
Preventing unauthorised access to the school was a key factor in the fence solution that was put forward to Grant Associates and main contractor BAM Construction. The perimeter comprises Dulok-Lite with 656 Twin Wire Mesh Panels to provide a cost-effective but high-quality fencing design.
For the playground, a ‘screen from view’ perimeter fencing solution was achieved using Exempla. The main fencing contractor, Chestnut Products, adapted the profiled mesh to include wooden screens. Mark Tyrrell, managing director of Chestnut Products said, “We wanted to create a modern look to the play area fencing. It was important to the school and the design that natural screen from view was used. By using the Exempla mesh panels we were able to install wooden slats. The SafeTFix system gives the added advantage of no external fixings.”
Internally, the school grounds benefitted from the Rotop mesh fencing system. Rotop provides safety and security by employing a rolled top and bottom. The mesh panels comprise an aperture of 150x50mm, and like the rest of the fencing is galvanised to BS EN ISO 1461 and powder-coated RAL 5008 blue grey to BS EN 13438.
The project also includes two all-weather 1G and 3G sports pitches. Dulok Sports fencing was installed on both pitches with wooden kickboards at the base of the mesh panels. Access control was provided via CLD Fencing Systems’ Lockmaster Swing Gates with matching infill. Additional Lockmaster Swing Gates provide security for the rest of the project.
Andy Lock, BAM construction manager for the London Region said, “This is a complex scheme that required a lot of careful coordination and planning. The St Mary Magdalene School will generate lasting benefits for local education in the borough of Greenwich for years to come.”
