Installed on a residential extension in Leigh-on-Sea, Essex, a contemporary Pitchglaze roof window from Glazing Vision not only enhances the quality of light in the kitchen, but also provides spectacular sky-only views. The architect’s brief was for the new kitchen to be as light and open as possible – ‘as if the garden forms an extension of the house in the summer’.

Six-metre wide glazed sliding doors span the rear of the new structure, providing an important connection to nature, as well as high levels of daylight. They also ensure unadulterated views out towards the garden, even from the snug on the mezzanine floor. As the name suggests, this space has a cosy inviting ambience with an open fire and deep blue walls.

Oversized roof window maximises daylight
A pair of traditional roof windows illuminates a narrow passageway linking the kitchen to the home office and downstairs cloakroom. The main kitchen workspace is set back from the sliding doors, making it potentially prone to shadows. Located above the cabinets housing the fridge freezer and cooker, a generously sized Pitchglaze roof window from Glazing Vision ensures that the whole space remains bright and airy.

Precision engineered at the company’s Norfolk factory, the fixed, in-plane roof window measures 1×3 metres, and is installed in a landscape format to a roof pitch of 45 degrees. Standard Pitchglaze roof windows are suitable for pitched tile roofs measuring 15-60 degrees, and can be installed either horizontally or vertically. The external fittings of the CE-marked roof window are located in a hidden gutter and obscured using colour-matched silicones and glues.

As well as being quick and easy to install, the Pitchglaze roof window was favoured by the homeowner for its technical properties. It is manufactured from high-specification, thermally- efficient, low-emissivity coated glass, which is heat-soak tested for additional safety. Furthermore, should any damage occur in the future, the window is easy to replace from the outside, without damaging the internal finish.
