Many playgrounds are designed with ideal weather in mind, but intense sun, rain and changing temperatures throughout the year can render them unusable and unsafe without proper considerations. If you’re currently designing a playground, incorporating climate-responsive features and materials is important. Elements such as durable surfacing and shade structures for playgrounds can help ensure kids can stay active, comfortable and protected across different seasons.

Why year-round playground design is important for communities
Playgrounds are amazing places for children to develop important physical, cognitive, emotional and social skills. However, as the planet continues to warm and extreme weather events like cold spells and heavy rainfalls become more frequent, kids are spending less time outside. This may seem inevitable, but reduced outdoor play can have serious consequences for their overall health and well-being. On the one hand, letting them play in less-than-ideal weather isn’t the best solution, either.

That’s why prioritising comfort and safety in playground design is imperative. Doing so will help children remain active and engaged in outdoor spaces. Furthermore, it will ensure that public investments deliver consistent value. When playgrounds remain comfortable in both warmer and cooler months, communities can enjoy spaces that support regular play, exercise and social interaction throughout the year.

Four ways to design playgrounds that never go out of season
The following are four ways to design playgrounds that remain safe and comfortable for children, come rain or shine.

1. Add playground shade structures to reduce heat exposure
Providing adequate shade is an effective way to protect children from direct sun exposure and prevent equipment surfaces from overheating. One of the best places to get shade structures for playgrounds is USA SHADE, which provides a range of systems that can be tailored to different playground layouts. These include hip shade structures, multi-panel designs and shade sail solutions, among others.

All of the company’s playground shade structures can block up to 97% of harmful UV rays and reduce temperatures beneath the canopy by up to 25° Fahrenheit. Aside from creating a safer, more comfortable play environment, these structures also improve visual aesthetics.

2. Use materials that withstand temperature fluctuations
Outdoor play equipment must withstand both high temperatures and freezing conditions to ensure safety. Additionally, durable materials also reduce long-term maintenance costs and carbon footprint. Manufacturers such as Kompan create play systems like swings using TextMade — a material that offers weatherproof durability with minimal maintenance.

The material has been evaluated in heat chambers at up to 140° Fahrenheit and in a freezing-water expansion stress test. It’s also engineered to withstand the stretching forces created during children’s activities and maintain structural integrity under load for added safety.

3. Install all-weather surfacing and drainage
Rain and snow can quickly make playgrounds unusable if water collects around play structures. Without proper drainage, water can pool and freeze, creating hazardous ice patches. Therefore, you need a gentle site slope of 1%-4% to direct water away naturally, as well as the right surfacing material.

Poured-in-place rubber surfacing from AAA State of Play is a great option. This durable playground surfacing material is slip-resistant, low maintenance and performs well in all seasons, even in freezing temperatures. Moreover, the company has drainage mats and geotextiles to improve water flow and maintain safer conditions for children.

4. Include water features
You can help reduce heat and make playgrounds more comfortable during warmer months by installing water features. Some options to consider include splash pads, drinking fountains, misting poles and interactive water pumps to deliver direct relief.

For smaller installations, Cadron Creek Play’s Playground Pump Systems provide an interactive water-play experience. These systems simulate a traditional hand pump but connect to a pressurized water line that automatically refills the tank as children pump. Made from hand-polished 304 stainless steel, the pumps resist rust and withstand heavy use. They also support sensory development, motor skills and early STEM learning through hands-on exploration.

Let the play continue, no matter the weather
Designing playgrounds for every season is a smart response to changing weather patterns and growing community needs. Incorporating playground shade structures, durable materials and effective drainage systems supports safer, more comfortable outdoor play throughout the year.
