On a roll with innovative new mosaic
There is so much to marvel at in the digital world that it is easy to miss the influence that technology is having on the way traditional materials are being used within the construction industry. A good example is the laser-cut precision of the sedimentary rock types now available as a new form of mosaic from Marmox.

The company has long been prominent amongst bathroom and wetroom manufacturers for the quality and performance of its products. These include Showerlay membrane and its ubiquitous Multiboards, which are not only waterproof and provide thermal insulation, but also make an ideal tile-backer for walls or floors. Always seeking to assist specifiers and contractors in creating impressive interiors, Marmox has now introduced Slicedstone mosaic. The range comprises ten different blends of natural rock (sourced from the Indian sub-continent), which are accurately set out on a waterproof membrane with an in-built de-coupling system. This enables professionals to create clean contemporary tiling solutions, which will appeal to the most discerning eye in a variety of applications.

Attention to detail and the mosaic’s membrane-facilitated fixing method are further enhanced through a partnership with sector specialist, Murexin, resulting in the perfect bond. The colour palette consists of Copper, Bronze, Beige, Graphite, Autumn Leaf, Mars Stone and Sea Stone. There are also three mosaic mixes: Beige Stone, Copper Stone and Slate; Lava Stone and Lauze; as well as Slate, Lava Stone and Sea Stone.

The Slicedstone range is already attracting a good deal of interest among architects and interior designers who are seeking to deliver distinctive visual effects, as well as dependable performance across different sectors. These include sports and leisure, wellness and commercial, spa hotels, and residential. The 10-year product guarantee and fully integrated installation method will appeal to operators of such facilities.

Installation times can be up to 80 per cent quicker than using traditional techniques, while consistent tile thickness and accurate 3mm joint spacing consume 60 per cent less grout. The technology employed enhances the sharpness of the finished surface. Slicedstone lends itself to installation on both contoured and sloping surfaces, as well as across ceilings. The 10 colours are available in tile sizes of 25x25mm or 50x50mm, and a choice of 500x1000mm roll lengths, or convenient 300mm square sections.

Slicedstone can be used as part of a fully integrated specification featuring Marmox and Murexin products – covering the basic building substrate through to the occupied space – with the two companies providing technical advice appropriate to any situation. This can extend from initial advice on design and specification to compatibility with interface materials and even on-site support where necessary. This ensures 100  per cent peace of mind for specifiers, developers and end-users.

The installation process follows industry standard directions on preparation of the substrate and priming with DX9 multipurpose primer. Surface irregularities should be addressed using Murexin smoothing compounds. There are two Murexin adhesives that can be used for the installation of Marmox Slicedstone, both of which are appropriate to places where underfloor heating is fitted. D391 is an acrylic adhesive suitable for all types of stable dry substrate, including those exposed to high levels of foot traffic or other heavy usage. MS-K499 is a silane, high strength adhesive with the added benefit of being suitable for permanently wet areas or those subject to large temperature variations. In both cases, FX65 grouting can take place 24 hours after installation. Following this, a seal coat can be applied – using the PU40 two-component polyurethane system – protecting and densifying the surface.

Mosaics that provide classic style through modern technology
The presence of natural rock means that Marmox’s Slicedstone mosaics provide subtle variations in colour, texture and grain. This sets them above reconstituted materials with their repeating pattern. Furthermore, the use of real stone ensures a richly coloured and tactile surface that provides an architectural statement in the bathroom or wherever else it is applied in the house.
