Loader Monteith has reconfigured a Victorian merchant’s house outside Glasgow to create a home for an architectural designer and ceramicist, and added a blackened timber pottery studio.

The Victorian property located in a conversation area of Lenzie, Dunbartonshire had previously been subdivided into a pair of flats. The new owners brought local practice Loader Monteith on board to reunify the house and expand the ground floor living area to encompass a new combined kitchen and lounge, a garage and a pottery studio.

The front of the single-storey extension, which extends from one side of the house to create a new wing, is cast in stone to match the original facade, while at the rear it is wrapped in black timber cladding. A skylight set into the top of the asymmetric pitched roof form and floor-to-ceiling glazing floods the new living space with natural light. The pottery studio located to the rear of the house is more hermetic, with walls lined in muted blue panelling and lighting set subtly between the exposed beams overhead.

Inside the new living space has been finished with smoked-oak cabinetry and a polished concrete floor, while the original parquet flooring has been maintained throughout the original portion of the property. A new stair with solid wooden balustrades connects the three levels, with a section of deep blue panelling and carpeting adding a sense of drama to the final leg of the ascent.
