Schools across the UK are facing increasing pressure to keep students safe. They must balance effective perimeter security with budget cuts, while avoiding a fortress-like appearance. To better understand these challenges and provide an informed solution, Jacksons Fencing has questioned over 1,000 stakeholders within schools, including parents, teachers and architects, as part of a major research project. 10 million children attend UK’s schools every day, and with that number set to rise by 10 per cent by 2025, safety and security is an issue that must be addressed.

The free-to-download report, Protecting the Future, is the first industry-wide assessment of security in educational facilities based on original research in recent years. It reveals a number of concerning issues – not least that almost 60 per cent of architects know of schools that are affected by fencing and gate issues, and a worrying 17 per cent of schools are down-specifying to save costs. Furthermore, 31 per cent of teachers and 23 per cent of parents believe their local school wasn’t designed with the security of staff and students in mind, and more than a third of head teachers admitted they wouldn’t know where to go to find out more about school security.

From the importance of industry standards, such as LPCB’s Security Ratings, to introducing associated bodies, such as Secured by Design, the report provides in-depth insights and guidance on how best to create a safe yet welcoming learning environment. Jacksons Fencing has been designing, manufacturing and installing security fencing in homes, commercial sites and schools for decades, gaining expert knowledge of effective security and access control solutions. As well as providing RoSPA-approved, LPS 1175-certified and ISO 9001-compliant security fencing and access control solutions, Jacksons also carries out consultations and site assessments to ensure every school is as secure as it can be.
