SIG Design & Technology has launched a new RIBA-approved CPD entitled Roof Refurbishment: Choosing the Best Solution. The seminar demonstrates how to apply a structured approach to the design and specification of membrane roofing systems for refurbishment projects. Its aims are to equip the specifier with a better understanding of what should be included in a roof survey, and to provide the ability to choose the best roofing system for the job while avoiding common mistakes and problems, and give a better understanding of compliance with UK British Standards and Codes of Practice.

Buildings.

The first part of the 60-minute presentation explores the three stages of the roof refurbishment process: what should be included in the roof survey, how the condition of the roof will influence the design, and finding the right roofing solution. The latter is based on a cost-design-compliance formula, and looks at the benefits of bitumen, single ply and liquid coating systems. The section concludes with an education-based case study utilising a combination of complementary interfacing products, including bituminous roofing, single ply PVC membrane and composite panels.

Difficult to detect without investigation, and potentially highly damaging to the building envelope, interstitial condensation is the focus of the second part of the seminar. A highly informative case study highlights the problems caused by the misdiagnosis of this important yet often misunderstood issue.

The third and fourth parts of the presentation deal with what specifiers can expect from roofing suppliers and key design advice. The former covers technical information and support, standards compliance, on-site support and guarantees – both in terms of product and workmanship. Detailing, material compatibility and interface issues are explored in the latter. Also included, and equally relevant, are examples of what not to do in design terms. Examples include solar thermal panel and cabling installations.

Buildings.

Last but not least is an overview of key legislative and statutory information, as well related expert bodies, including the National Federation of Roofing Contractors (NFRC) and Single Ply Roofing Association (SPRA).
