Wood-effect metal baffles from Armstrong Ceiling Solutions have been installed – for the first time in the UK – on Blake House, a refurbished, three-storey office building in Cowley Business Park, Uxbridge, Middlesex. Designed by BPR Architects, the £3.9m project includes 750-square-metres of additional office space at the rear, remodelled cores, and a new double-height entrance lobby.

Armstrong Ceiling Solutions’ VP-500 vertical metal baffles with a walnut finish

The 300mm-high, VP-500 vertical metal baffles with a US walnut finish are intended to give the lobby extension and main staircase a contemporary linear aesthetic. The scheme also features 2800-square-meters of Armstrong’s 600x600mm metal MicroLook tiles in a Prelude 15mm grid in the open-plan office areas; Armstrong’s new Drywall Grid System (DGS) for plasterboard ceilings in the staircases; and Ultima+ Vector 600x1200mm mineral tiles on a 24mm grid in the core areas.

Special attention was given to the specification of fixtures and fittings in the communal spaces, many of which feature black walnut to echo the baffles. As well as delivering the desired architectural aesthetic, the metal baffles facilitate easy integration of services and provide the required level of acoustic attenuation. The latter is achieved using perforated sides and an acoustic inlay fleece. Manufactured from up to 30 per cent recycled steel, the baffles are quick-and-easy to install, as well as highly scratch-resistant.

BPR project architect Ross McMahon said, “Armstrong’s metal baffles soften the acoustics in the lobby and the timber-effect brings the outside environment of trees inside the building. They also match the interior walnut finishes used on the doors, reception desk and handrails. We have used and trusted Armstrong’s comprehensive product portfolio for many years, and would be unlikely to look elsewhere unless a client requested a system that it does not provide.” Ross added, “We have a long-standing relationship with Armstrong. The sales representative who visited us for this project was very knowledgeable and we were impressed by him.”
